Michael R. Long


Born February 1, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York to Myra and Michael Long, Michael R. Long was a small businessman in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and is currently Chairman of the New York State Conservative Party.

Mr. Long attended Richmond Hill High School in Queens. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1961. In 1963 Mr. Long married the former Eileen Dougherty. Mr. and Mrs. Long have nine children (7 sons: Michael, Matthew, James, Robert, Christopher, Francis and Edward and 2 daughters: Eileen and Maureen) and 10 grandchildren.

A volunteer for United States Senator Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign for President, Mr. Long registered as a member of the New York State Conservative Party that same year. In 1968, Mr. Long was elected as a District Leader of the Conservative Party and went on to be elected Chairman of the Kings County Conservative Party in 1972 and Vice Chairman of the State Conservative Party in 1974.

In 1975, Mr. Long was elected to one term as the Chairman of Community School Board 19 in Brooklyn and in 1981 became the first registered Conservative to serve on the New York City Council, representing the borough of Brooklyn as its “At Large” member until 1983. In 1980 and again in 1984, Mr. Long proudly cast his vote on behalf of New York State for President Ronald Reagan as a member of the Electoral College. Mr. Long continued his leadership in the Conservative Party, being elected Executive Vice Chairman in 1985 and ultimately State Chairman in 1989. In 1994, under the leadership of Chairman Long the Conservative Party succeeded in providing the margin of victory for the historic election of Republican/Conservative Governor George Pataki and Attorney General Dennis Vacco.

Mr. Long serves on the Board of Directors for the American Conservative Union, as Secretary on the Board of Trustees for Daytop Village, Inc., additionally, he is the Chairman of Daytop International. Mr. Long is currently Vice President of the Board of Directors for Holy Angels Academy in Bay Ridge. He has also been active in numerous civic and charitable organizations including serving as Vice Chairman of the 5th Avenue BID (Business Improvement District) and Vice Chairman of the Friends of Fort Hamilton Army Base, the Dyker Heights Civic Association, the American Legion, the Guild for Exceptional Children and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 22. He has received several awards for his service to the community. 

In June, 2009 Mr. Long was honored for his dedication to pro-life, as a Knight in the Order of St. Gregory the Great. Other awards include the Knights of Columbus Pro Patria Award, the Bishop Mugavero CYO Award, the Kiwanis Club Man of the Year Award, Grand Marshal of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the New York State Right to Life Committee – Terence Cooke “Gift of Life” Award and the 2004 Man of the Year – American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facility Award and 2004 Grand Marshal of the July 4th Knights of Columbus Parade. Mr. Long has also been honored by the Sergeant’s Benevolent Association and the Retired Detectives Association. 

Mr. Long has appeared on both national and local news programs including Crossfire, Hardball, WABC radio, Face Off and Inside City Hall on NY 1, to name a few. The Long’s reside in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and are members of Our Lady of Angels Roman Catholic Church.
